Red foxes are not always red. Although the fur of this species usually has a reddish cast, others, (cross breeds) are red or brown, with dark areas on their under parts extending up along the shoulders and back.. Such color variations are caused by genetic differences, can occur even amongst pups in the same litter.. Red foxes are born in the spring and weaned when only one month old or more. Active throughout the year, they are usually observed early in the morning and late in the afternoon. These notorious chicken thieves are actually quite opportunistic in their diet: although they prey mainly on small mammals and birds, they also eat insects, carrion and fruits.

This Red Fox, was taken last summer, early in the morning, at Blue Lake Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada while hiking on the Spruce Fen trail.
