Description
A simple introduction to caterpillars ... This is one insect species in which the caterpillar is better known than the adult....Larva - The larva (caterpillar) hatches from its egg and eats it. Then it eats mostly dill leaves almost constantly. The caterpillar molts (loses its old skin) four times as it grows; after each molt it eats its old skin. The egg starts out as pale yellow and turns very dark as the caterpillar matures. It takes about two weeks to hatch into a tiny caterpillar and about a month to grow into the full its size of about 2 inches long. it will stop eating and find a place (like a protected branch) on which to pupate. It completes its life cycle and eventually turns into a Black Swallowtail butterfly.
