Description
'Eater of Twigs' (Algonkian)
The moose is the largest living member of the deer family. which is found in the boreal forests of the new and old world, (where it is known as the elk). Originating in Asia, it migrated into North America over the Bering Land Bridge, along with man and many other animals, during the Pleistocene Era.
This ungainly looking relic of the Ice Age, is admirably adapted for survival in the land of conifers and lakes. Carried on giraffe-like legs, the moose can reach three meters high for nourishing twigs, and move effortlessly over the brush, muskeg, water and snow. Their senses of smell and hearing are acute, in this forest edge herbivore, while vision is less important in the animals continual surveillance of the environment for predators, particularly when man and wolves are nearby.
