Description

Construction of this church began in 1930. The exterior painting and the elaborate interior decoration, mainly done by local amateur artists, was begun in 1938 when the structure was completed. This work was well advanced in 1952, when the Church was consecrated. The design is the work of the Reverend Philip Ruh, O.M.I. (1883-1962). he was resposible for planning at least 30 Ukrainian Catholic Churches in Canada, thirteen of which survive in Manitoba. Reverand Ruh worked alongside his congregation at Cook's Creek in building this church, the largest of his remaining creations in Manitoba. Known as a "Prairie Cathedral," and rising out of the flat prairie, its silhouette evokes the great Byzantine churches of the Ukraine. this multi-doomed structure is large in scale, and architecturally complex...Reverend Ruh also oversaw the construction of the adjoining Grotto at Lourdes, France.
